Here's a friendly reminder:
On the off chance you haven't taken care of either of the following items yet, please take time to do them now so you don't get burned:
1. Back up your data. Everybody knows this, but a few people haven't gotten around to doing it yet, and then when their computer dies, they're left with...nothing. We use Mozy for online computer backup both at the office and at home and I've been happy with it (if there are other solutions you believe are better, feel free to comment and share). My brother had two laptops die in two years. He lost everything twice. Please don't let it happen to you.
2. Use surge protectors, not power strips. Everyone knows this, too, but if you just happen to have your hardware connected to a power strip (a power strip doesn't have surge protection) and you have a power surge, you will fry your hardware. I speak from recent experience, as my wife had to buy a new computer and monitor at home because of a thunderstorm last week. We've invested in a lifetime supply of power strips so this never happens again; I absolutely hate spending money for no good reason. Battery back-ups with surge protection are another alternative.
Happy computing!
